📚 What is Past Tense?

The past tense is used to talk about actions or states that happened before now - things that are finished or completed.

I walked to school yesterday.

They were happy at the party.

🎯 Simple Past Tense

Regular Verbs (Add -ed)

Most verbs form the past tense by adding -ed to the base form

walk → walked (I walked to the store.)

play → played (She played soccer yesterday.)

talk → talked (We talked for hours.)

💡 Spelling Rules:

  • Ends in -e: just add -d (love → loved, bake → baked)
  • Ends in consonant + y: change y to i, add -ed (cry → cried, study → studied)
  • Ends in vowel + y: just add -ed (play → played, enjoy → enjoyed)
  • One syllable, short vowel + consonant: double the consonant (stop → stopped, plan → planned)
