π Expanding & Factoring
βExpandingβ means multiplying brackets out. βFactoringβ is the
reverse β writing an expression as a product of brackets. These
identities are worth memorising:
Worked Examples
Expand \((x + 2)(x + 5)\):
1. \((x + 2)(x + 5) = x^2 + (2 + 5)x + (2)(5)\)
2. \(= x^2 + 7x + 10\)
Factor \(x^2 + 7x + 10\):
1. Find two numbers that multiply to \(10\) and add to
\(7\): \(2\) and \(5\).
2. \(x^2 + 7x + 10 = (x + 2)(x + 5)\)
