โฑ๏ธ What is Time?
Time measures how long something takes to happen. In the study of motion, time tells us how long an object has been moving. Together with speed and distance, time helps us describe exactly how things travel from one place to another!
Measuring Time
We measure time using clocks, stopwatches, and timers. The units we use depend on how long something lasts:
๐ Units of Time:
- Seconds (s) โ the basic unit scientists use for motion
- Minutes (min) โ 1 minute = 60 seconds
- Hours (h) โ 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds
Finding Time from Distance and Speed
If you know the distance and the speed, you can work out how long the journey takes:
๐งฎ Time Formula:
\( \text{Time} = \dfrac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}} \)
\( t = \dfrac{d}{s} \)
๐ Let's Try It:
If you need to travel 100 meters and you run at 5 m/s, the time it takes is:
\( \dfrac{100\ \text{m}}{5\ \text{m/s}} = 20\ \text{seconds} \)
It would take you 20 seconds to reach the finish line!
The Motion Triangle
Speed, distance, and time are like three best friends. If you know any two of them, you can always find the third!
๐ก One Family of Formulas:
These three formulas all come from the same idea:
- \( \text{Speed} = \dfrac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}} \)
- \( \text{Distance} = \text{Speed} \times \text{Time} \)
- \( \text{Time} = \dfrac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}} \)
